Sturgeon Bay, WI February 2022

In February of 2022, I was feeling cooped up from the pandemic, and ready to get out of the house—even if that meant just spending time in another house. The best thing to come out of covid, for me, was my obsession with Airbnbs. What a great way to go somewhere, and still have a private place where you didn’t have to worry about covid and other people! For this trip, I did what I’ve mentioned in other posts—looked up Wisconsin in Airbnb a bit last minute, and chose a house that fit my needs. It brought me to Sturgeon Bay/Door County, a popular tourist destination that I have never explored in the winter months. It contained a gorgeous tub, which was my one desire when searching for a place, and it was dog friendly.

To get there, I drove through Oshkosh, Wisconsin, a city I used to live in and where I met my husband. The dog and I stopped at a local brewery, Bare Bones, to stock up on some beer for the cabin, before continuing on our way.

The cabin we stayed in was small, but adorable! It was right on the lake, it was private, it had a fireplace and a TV, and the fabulous tub that I have mentioned. Is there any better way to spend a couple of cold winter nights?! Not in my opinion.

I kicked off my night by ordering a pizza from a local place. It was a Hawaiian pizza with jalapeños. The beauty of solo tripping is that I can eat anything I want to. My husband would have never allowed pineapple on pizza. Then I fired up the jets in the tub and took a nice long soak before relaxing in bed with a good book.

In the morning, I enjoyed a cup of coffee on my little porch, and then took the dog to Cave Point County Park to walk around. As you can see in the photos, this is a gorgeous winter wonderland. We are so lucky here in Wisconsin to have incredible scenery. Fortunately, I was wise enough to remember my crampons, because navigating that ice without spikes would have been treacherous.

To warm up, we then ventured to Bridge Up Brewing for a couple of beers, then went back to the cabin so I could have another soak in the tub. I brought my own meals from home, because going out to eat with my dog is extremely difficult, so I can’t make any restaurant recommendations at this time.

The next morning I checked out and began heading home. We stopped at a few places along Lake Michigan to take some photos of the frozen tundra, and made a stop in Green Bay to check out a frozen waterfall that a friend recommended to me known as Wequiock Falls.

It was a short but relaxing trip away from home, much needed for a nurse working through a pandemic. Door County is full of tourists in the summer months, but I strongly encourage you to check out the winter scenes sometime too.
